Rosangela Silvestre Bali Training Intensive

The Silvestre Technique Intensive is a truly rare and special opportunity to train with Rosangela Silvestre, master teacher, choreographer, and creator of the internationally recognised Silvestre Dance Technique from Bahia, Brazil. It is a unique moment to experience her work in Bali, as she travels internationally to share this profound and culturally rooted practice.

This five-day intensive offers a deep, embodied study of movement as expression, symbolism, and connection, supporting dancers to move beyond form and into presence, clarity, and authentic expression. Open to beginners and all levels of dance experience!

Held at Canggu Studio, Bali, this immersive container invites focused practice, inquiry, and creative exploration. Rooted in contemporary dance and African Brazilian cultural knowledge, the Silvestre Technique conditions and prepares the body to access its expressive potential through a refined dialogue between physical structure, intention, and inspiration.

The Intensive is limited to 25 participants and priority to those signed up for the full 5 days

What You Will Study;

Across five days, participants will move through:

- Silvestre Technique Practice

Daily technique sessions to condition the body, refining alignment, coordination, and expressive clarity.

- Movement Analysis

Understanding how movement is organised, perceived, and communicated.

- Symbolism of the Silvestre Technique

Exploring the symbolic structures that support intention and personal expression.

- Symbology of the Orixás

Study of African Brazilian archetypes, gestures, and rhythms, and their relationship to the elements. Earth, Water, Air, and Fire as sources of movement inspiration.

- Integration & Reflection

Time to consolidate learning and integrate technique, symbolism, and expression into individual practice.

- Composition

Participants will be guided through a creative process to develop a short composition. This work will be shared within the group, integrating technique, symbolism, and personal expression.

ABOUT ROSANGELA: 

Rosangela Silvestre Choreographer, instructor, dancer and creator of the Silvestre Dance Technique, Rosangela is a native of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, where she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Dance and post-graduated specializing in choreography, achieving her degree from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). She has researched dance and music in Brazil, India, Egypt, Senegal and Cuba as part of her ever-evolving and eclectic palette of movement.

She acquired training in such diverse techniques as: Martha Graham, Limón, Horton, Floor Bar, Classic Ballet, Dunham Technique, and has experienced diverse dance expressions - such as Germany Theater Dance, Contemporary, Folkloric, as well as Traditional dances of Africa and other continents. Her instructors include Raimundo Bispo dos Santos (Mestre King), Mercedes Baptista, Clyde Morgan, Carlos Moraes, Nelma Seixas, among others, beginning in the late 1970s. Since 1981, Silvestre started to travel in and out of Brazil to teach, to train dancers, to perform, to lecture and to demonstrate, to consult, and attended seminars and residencies in diverse universities, dance festivals such as: Colorado College Dance Festival; 
New Orleans Dance Festival; the Charlotte Lavagem Festival; and dance camps such as the California Brazil Camp each year.  She choreographed numerous dance pieces for companies based in Brazil - Balé Folclórico da Bahia and Odunde - as well as Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Company, Ballet Hispanico Repertory Company, American Academy of Ballet, Roots of Brazil, Dance Brazil, Viver Brasil, Muntu Dance Theater, and the Kendra Kimbrough Dance Company.

Silvestre's dance investigation and constant development created an opportunity to connect with the eclectic American musician Steve Coleman, with whom she traveled to diverse countries which have African roots in their music and dance. With Steve Coleman, Rosangela developed an idea to have the body as an instrument that provides the movement-form of any sound that can be captured - thereby discovering and creating dance at any moment.

Rosangela's use of her voice is an integral part of her work in dance. In September 2011 she completed the CD:

"Voices of Nature" recorded and produced by Mike Zecchino at The Nail Recording Studio in Tucson, Arizona. 

"In our imagination, revealing and expressing, we tell our stories ... that even though our stories are different, they show points of connections and similarities, in gestures, in actions and reactions of joys, sadnesses, defeats and victories that pass by transforming themselves through time, but so present for aspects that integrate us, for living and continuing to live and experience the Forces of the Earth (Forcas da Terra)."
